The keyboard-first screenshot tool.
Vim keys, arrow keys, or the mouse. Your call.
Vishot is Vim-inspired and built for macOS. Pick a window, a single button, or a whole display, mark it up, and paste it without reaching for the mouse.
How it works
-
Shift⌘S opens the picker. Pick a window, select an element, mark it up and copy it without touching the mouse. hjkl or the arrow keys steer. The mouse works too, but it doesn't have to.
-
The arrow keys jump to the nearest window in that direction, across every screen. G takes a whole display, and v selects any rectangle.
-
f puts a label on every button, message and pane. Type the label and it's selected. No dragging a box around it.
-
Shift↵ freezes the shot in place. a draws an arrow, r a box, t a label, c crops.
-
vishot capture --app Chatsaves a PNG and prints its path, so a coding agent can look at the app it's building. A bundled skill teaches the agent the commands. -
y copies it, s saves a PNG to your screenshot folder, S does both. Nothing is uploaded: Vishot makes no network requests.
FAQ
Is it free?
Yes. Every feature on this page is free: picking, labels, markup, copy and save. There may be optional paid extras later, but nothing here will move behind a paywall.
When can I try it?
No date yet. Join the waitlist and you'll get one email when the beta opens.
How is it different from the built-in screenshots?
The built-in tool makes you click a window or drag a box around what you want. Vishot picks windows, single buttons and panes, or whole displays from the keyboard, and lets you mark the shot up before it's copied.
Do I need to know Vim?
No. It's Vim-inspired, not Vim-only. The arrow keys, Tab and ↵ do the same as hjkl, and the bar at the bottom of the screen always shows the keys you can press. The mouse works too: hover selects, click copies.
Can I change the keys?
Yes. By release every key will be remappable in Settings, the Shift⌘S shortcut included, so you can make it feel like Vim, like Emacs, or like neither.
What permissions does it need?
Screen Recording, to take the screenshot. Accessibility is optional: it powers the f labels, and Vishot asks for it the first time you press f, never at launch.
Does it work in Chrome, Slack and Electron apps?
Yes. The first time you press f in one of them, the labels take a few seconds to appear while the app builds its accessibility tree. After that they're quick.
Where do my screenshots go?
To the clipboard, or as a timestamped PNG in your macOS screenshot folder (the Desktop unless you changed it). ⌘S in the editor lets you pick the place.
Are my screenshots uploaded anywhere?
No. Vishot makes no network requests. Every capture stays on your clipboard or your disk.
